Australia approves three onshore wind projects (2.4 GW) in New South Wales

The Australian Federal Government has approved the development of three onshore wind projects in New South Wales (NSW), south-eastern Australia, totalling a capacity of over 2.4 GW.

Australia gave the green light to the 1,332 MW Liverpool Range wind project near Coolah and the 700 MW Spicers Creek wind project near Gulgong, both located within the Central West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), as well as to the 372 MW Hills of Gold wind project, located near Nundle. These three projects are expected to offset emissions by 6.5 MtCO2/year.

Earlier in March 2025, the Australian Government also granted feasibility licences for two offshore wind projects to be located off Australia’s south-eastern coast, and totalling 3.2 GW of capacity.

At the end of 2023, Australia had a total installed capacity of 106 GW, of which wind accounted for 10% (11 GW, 100% onshore).
