Australia approves the 750 MW Sandy Creek Solar project in New South Wales

The Australian government has approved a 750 MWac (840 MWdc) solar project with battery storage being developed by Lightsource bp. The Sandy Creek Solar project is planned to be installed about 25 km southwest of Dunedoo and 30 km northwest of Gulgong, within the Goulburn-Mulwaree Council in the Australian state of New South Wales, and it is expected to produce 1.7 TWh/year of electricity with its roughly 1.5 million PV panels. The size of the battery storage system is yet to be determined, however Lightsource bp has suggested a battery size of up to 750 MW/3,000 MWh.

Lightsource bp is a UK solar developer, a subsidiary of the British oil and gas company BP, and it is currently developing the 520 MW Goulburn River and the 400 MW Gundary solar projects in New South Wales, and the 364 MW West Mokoan solar project in Victoria (Australia).

At the end of 2022, Australia had a power capacity of 101 GW, of which solar accounts for 30%.
