The Argentinian nuclear power company, Nucleoeléctrica Argentina, has secured the funds for the life extension project of the Atucha I nuclear reactor.
The Unit I of the Atucha nuclear power plant consists of a 362 MW pressurised heavy-water reactor (PHWR) in the Buenos Aires province. It began commercial operation in 1974 with a license for an expected service of 32 years of full power, which was first extended 2018 until 2024. After 50 years of operation, the unit’s maintenance outage began in late September 2024, and the secured funds should ensure a 20-year life extension of the Atucha I. The unit should now be able to operate for 70 years until 2044.
Other than Atucha I, Argentina currently has two other nuclear power plants in operation, namely the 745 MW Atucha II plant (commissioned in 2016) and the 656 MW Embalse plant (commissioned in 1984). In 2023, nuclear represented almost 4% of Argentina’s installed capacity with 1,755 MW and 6% of its power generation with about 9.5 TWh.
