ASE inked equipment contracts for Kudankulam-5 and 6 units (India)

The state-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) signed several contracts with the Russian nuclear engineering company AtomStroyExport (ASE) regarding the construction of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant (KNPP) third stage, which includes two new reactors - units 5 and 6 - in Tamil Nadu, southern India. The signed contracts include first-stage design works and supplies of main equipment. ASE underlined that the KNPP third phase implementation began, which means procurement procedures for the delivery of Russian equipment on-site have started.

The governments of India and Russia agreed on the construction of units 5 and 6 in June 2017. Russia is expected to lend US$4.2bn over a 10-year period to finance their construction.

The KNPP will consist of up to eight VVER-1000 (pressurized water reactor) nuclear reactors of 1,000 MW each. The first one started commercial operations on 31 December 2014 and the second one in April 2017. India and Russia have already signed an agreement to build the second phase of the project (units 3 and 4) at a cost of Rs 33,000 crore (US$5.25bn). The units entered the construction phase in October 2016 and are expected to be commissioned in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Kudankulam units 5 and 6 are expected respectively for 2024 and 2025.
