Argentina signs construction contracts with CNNC for nuclear projects

Argentina's national nuclear group Nucleoeléctrica Argentina SA (NASA) has signed a general contract with China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) and CNNC's subsidiary China Zhongyuan Engineering Corporation (CZEC) for the construction of two new nuclear reactors.

Under the terms of the agreement, NASA and CNNC will start building a 700 MWe Candu-6 PHWR at the Atucha plant in 2018 and a 1000 MWe Hualong One PWR at an unspecified site in 2020. Construction is expected to last 8 years at least.

Argentina has three operational nuclear power plants, Embalse, Atucha-1, and Atucha-2 (745 MW), commissioned and renamed "Nestor Kirchner" in 2014. The country plans to invest a total of US$31bn in nuclear power in the next decade, including in the construction of the 4th and 5th nuclear power plants. In November 2015, Argentina and China signed agreements for these two reactor projects, worth US$15bn, to which China will contribute 85%. Agreements were renewed in June 2016.
