According to the Argentinian electricity market regulator CAMMESA, eight solar parks with a combined capacity of over 669 MW will enter operations in 2020. This includes the 300 MW Cauchari project, which was awarded to Jujuy Energía Minería Sociedad del Estado (JEMSE) in 2016 under the framework of Argentina's first renewable tender. The solar park has received US$390m in financing from the Eximbank of China and is built by a consortium between Chinese companies Shanghai Electric and Power China in the province of Jujuy. The project is expected to be commissioned in May 2020. In March 2019, the government of Argentina decided to support the 200 MW extension of the 300 MW Cauchari solar project.
The Renewable Energy Act adopted in 2015 sets the goal of increasing the share of renewables to 16% by 2021, 18% by 2023 and 20% by 2025. The law includes an obligation for large consumers (above 300 kW) to achieve these targets individually with fines on large electricity users that do not meet their target. In 2019, Argentina increased its solar capacity from 190 MW to 440 MW (+ 250 MW), which accounts for around 1% of the country's installed capacity. As of April 2020, more than 1.8 GW of solar capacity is under development.
