Areva evicted from selection process for Finland nuclear project

Fennovoima has decided to start direct negotiations with Toshiba for the construction of Hanhikivi-1 nuclear power plant in the Pyhäjoki municipality in northern Finland and to terminate the on-going bidding process for a 1,600 MW EU-ABWR reactor.

The company, whose shareholders are a now consortium of industrial companies and municipalities following the withdrawal of E.ON (34% stake) in February 2013, has decided to start assessing whether a mid-sized plant option would be feasible. Areva currently builds one model, the 1,600 MW EPR, that would no longer be considered for Hahnikivi; a smaller reactor, the 1,100 MW ATMEA reactor (developed by Areva and Mitsubishi Heavy Industry), is also available, though this model has not been sold anywhere.

In January 2012, Fennovoima received bids for a nuclear power plant supply from Areva and Toshiba. Negotiations have been on-going through the year and final updates on the bids were received at the end of January 2013.
