The UK-based engineering group Aquaterra Energy has partnered with the Netherlands’ Seawind Ocean Technology to jointly develop a 3.2 GW offshore floating wind and green hydrogen production project in Italy. Of this capacity, 1 GW will be dedicated to green hydrogen production once production units are fully operational.
The HyMed floating wind and green hydrogen project will consist in the installation of 1 GW of electrolysers to produce green hydrogen for export to global markets. The project is expected to be commissioned by 2027.
HyMed will be located in Italian ultra-deep waters, but the exact location of the project has not yet been revealed. The project is currently in the first permitting stage, with grid-connection and environmental impact assessments underway. Aquaterra and Seawind plan to develop more offshore renewable energy projects, including a 300 MW hydrogen project in southwest Greece named Icarus.
