The Indian power group Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGenco) has unveiled plans to develop two ultra mega supercritical coal-fired power plants rated 3,200 MW each in Odisha (India); the first project would be located in Srikakulam district and the second one at a pit-head station in Talcher (The Hindu, 09/03/2026). The company has started negotiations with the Indian coal producer Coal India Limited (CIL) to set up a joint venture for developing one of the projects.
APGenco's new projects would replace ageing coal-fired units at its thermal power plants that are due to retire in the coming years. In Odisha, two 210 MW units of the Dr. Narla Tatarao coal-fired power plant are more then 45-year old and four 210 MW units are more than 30 year old and expected to close soon, retiring 1.26 GW of capacity.
