Australia’s APA Group has taken a final investment decision (FID) to develop the Bulloo Interlink Pipeline (BIL), an interstate gas transmission project in Australia. The decision is underpinned by a five-year gas transportation and storage agreement with Origin Energy, covering APA’s east coast gas grid. The planned pipeline will link APA’s South West Queensland Pipeline in Queensland to the Moomba-Sydney Pipeline in New South Wales. The underground, high-pressure natural gas pipeline will have a maximum capacity of 800 TJ/day (approximately 7.4 bcm/year of gas).
The project is part of APA’s Stage 3 expansion programme for its east coast gas grid. According to the company, the programme is expected to increase north-to-south transportation capacity by 30% upon completion. APA also expects the network’s overall capacity to have increased by more than 50% since 2023 once Stage 3 is complete.
Construction is expected to start in early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, with Stage 3A remaining on schedule for 2028 and commercial operations targeted for 2029.
