Angola unveils power capacity development plan by 2016

In the framework of a plan 2010-2016, Angola plans to increase electricity generating capacities by 7,000 MW to 8,200 MW. The bulk of the added capacities will be hydropower dams. Construction of the the Cambambe II hydropower station has just started on the Cuanza river. Commissioning of the four 175 MW are scheduled in 2015. The rehabilitation of four turbines at the Cambambe I will be completed by Alstom and Odebrecht in 2012. Odebrech is also restoring the Ngove power station on the Cunene river (Huambo province): an initial 20 MW is expected to be completed by mid-2011. Feasibility studies will be completed in April 2011 on the Baynes dam at the Namibia border. The facility will have a capacity of 400 to 500 MW, equally shared between the two countries. Angola also intends to commission a 400 MW combined cycle gas-diesel plant in Soyo during 2011. The facility will supply the country's first gas liquefaction plant. The country plan to build 150 small hydropower stations by 2016, with 46 plants generating a total of 180 MW coming into service in 2012. The distribution network will be extended by 2,350 km.
