Angola plans to increase by 40% its power generation capacity to 9 GW by 2027

The Angolan Secretary of State for Energy has announced plans to increase the country’s power generation capacity from 6.4 GW to 9 GW by 2027 (Angop, 28/05/2026). According to Angop, the government expects to reach this goal with the commissioning of two large hydropower projects: the 2.2 GW Caculo Cabaça in the Middle Kwanza River, and the 881 MW Baynes hydropower project along the Cunene River at the border with Namibia

The Caculo Cabaça hydroelectric project started construction in 2017, and it is expected to reach completion by October 2026. The project was originally scheduled for commissioning in 2024. The Baynes hydropower project is a binational project planned between Angola and Namibia at the Cunene River that separates both countries. It is expected to reach an FID in 2026 and to start construction works in 2027

In 2023, the country launched its “Angola 2050 Long-Term Strategy” to replace its Angola Energy 2025 Vision, which originally aimed to expand the electrification rate to around 60% and increase installed capacity to 9.9 GW by 2025. By 2050, Angola sets a target of 95% of new installed capacity to come from renewables
