Angola has ratified the Paris Agreement

The Angola parliament has ratified the Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2015. The country’s late ratification was due to the need to develop tools to monitor greenhouse gas emissions and delays in the political process. In the meantime, Angola has formulated a climate policy. In addition, the country created a climate observatory and a national monitoring system that provides up-to-date emission data.

In 2018, energy related CO2 emissions in Angola rose by 10%, slightly below 2016 levels at 20 MtCO2. Previously, energy-related CO2 emissions increased very rapidly between 2006 and 2015 (+14%/year); they stabilised in 2016 and decreased by 16% in 2017 to 18 MtCO2.

In 2015, Angola submitted its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) with the commitment to reduce its GHG emissions by up to 35% by 2030 as compared to a BAU scenario. Under a conditional mitigation scenario, the country could further reduce its emissions trajectory by 50% below the BAU scenario. Identified mitigation actions focus mainly on the development of renewables for electricity generation and on reforestation.
