Angola could buy 5 GW from 11 GW Inga III project in the DR Congo

Angola could buy about 5 GW from the planned 11 GW Inga III hydropower project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Angola, which is currently negotiating with DRC to buy power from Inga I (0.4 GW) and Inga II (1.4 GW), would be interested to purchase electricity from Inga III as of 2025 at a price inferior to US$30/MWh.

DRC has set aside 6 GW of capacity from Inga III to supply its economy. In 2013, South Africa said it could buy 2.5 GW from Inga III. The commitment was recently confirmed by the new Integrated Resource Plan, adopted in October 2019.

The US$14bn project is developed by two consortia: a Chinese one, led by China Three Gorges Corporation, and a European one, led by Spain’s Cobra, a subsidiary of construction company ACS. The proposal from the two groups is yet to be approved by the new Congolese President, elected in December 2018. In the long run, the objective is to build a system of dams named Grand Inga totaling 40 GW.
