The 30,000 bbl/d Cabinda refinery, developed by Gemcorp with a 90% stake in the oil-rich province of Cabinda, in Angola, has started shipping fuels. The USD470m project is now supplying diesel to the domestic market and heavy fuel oil and petrochemical ingredient naphtha to international buyers (Moneyweb, 07/05/2026). The project, the first to be developed in Angola since its independence (Sonangol's Luanda refinery was commissioned in 1958), is expected to produce enough fuel to cover around 10% of local fuel demand and its capacity could be doubled to 60,000 bbl/d in a second phase estimated at USD700m.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese group MCA has inaugurated the 32 MW Luau off-grid solar park coupled with a 80 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the eastern province of Moxico-Leste, in Angola. The project is the largest solar+storage project ever built in the country and is expected to provide continuous electricity to more than 100,000 residents. The project is part of Angola’s Rural Electrification Project, a government initiative aiming at implementing 46 autonomous minigrids powered by solar parks, to reach over one million people across 60 communes in Angola.
