Andritz wins order for Iberdrola's Gouvães hydro project in Portugal

Spanish energy group Iberdrola has awarded Austrian electromechanical equipment manufacturer Andritz a €140m order for its Gouvães hydropower project in northern Portugal.

Under the terms of the contract, the scope of delivery comprises design, manufacturing, supply, and installation supervision for the complete electro- and hydro-mechanical equipment, including reversible pump turbines, motor generators, and electrical power systems.

The Gouvães hydropower project will include four 220 MW pump turbines for a total power generation capacity of 880 MW. The project will be built on the Támega River and is part of a larger 1,200 MW hydropower project worth €1.2bn (160 MW Alto Támega and 118 MW Daivõe). Iberdrola reached a €50m agreement with municipalities affected by the dams and signed the concession with the Government in 2014, paving the way for the start of construction. Construction of the first 160 MW started in early 2015 and will be completed by 2022.
