Amprion plans EUR42bn transmission network investment by 2030 (Germany)

German grid operator Amprion plans to invest EUR42 bn in expanding its transmission network between 2026 and 2030 (Amprion press release, 01/04/2026). Amprion had previously planned grid investments of EUR36.4bn by 2029. The programme extending to 2030 was announced after the company had already made record grid investments of EUR5.4bn in 2025.

Amprion built around 320 km of transmission lines in 2025, an increase of about 50% compared to 2024. The company also made progress on two power highway projects, Ultranet (2 GW) and A-Nord (2 GW).

  • The Ultranet project is a high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) power line that will transport electricity over around 342 kilometres from North Rhine-Westphalia to Baden-Württemberg. It will have a transmission capacity of 2 GW and a voltage of 380 kV. The line is due to be operational at the end of 2026.
  • The A-Nord power line (2 GW) is a HVDC line approximately 305 km long, running from Emden (Lower Saxony) to Osterath (North Rhine-Westphalia). It will transport electricity generated by wind parks in the northwest of Germany and the North Sea to consumption centres near the Rhine and Ruhr rivers in the west of the country. The A-Nord power line is due to go into operation in 2027.

The projects aim to reduce the need for redispatch measures and ease the burden on grid fees.

The increased investment activity in 2025 also led to higher earnings. The company’s annual revenue rose by 9% year-on-year to around EUR6.1bn. Adjusted net income surged by 72% to EUR672m, supported by a one-time tax effect; more specifically, tax items were reassessed after the German government adopted a tax relief package in July 2025.
