Ameren Missouri has submitted for approval to the Missouri Public Service Commission (MoPSC) a 2.1 GW combined-cycle natural gas power project in Missouri, US (Ameren press release, 27/07/2026).
The facility, which is located next to the existing Sioux Energy Center to leverage existing infrastructure and reduce project costs, is scheduled to start commercial operations in 2031.
According to Ameren Missouri, the plant is intended to provide 24/7 baseload power, support reliability during peak demand and extreme weather events, and compensate for the future retirement of older generating assets. The utility also highlighted increasing demand linked to economic development and new data centre investments.
The West Alton project forms part of Ameren Missouri’s broader Powering Missouri Growth Plan and long-term generation strategy.
Earlier in 2026, the utility received approval to develop the Big Hollow Energy Center, a hybrid facility combining natural gas generation (800 MW) with utility-scale battery storage (400 MW).
