Amentum has been appointed as programme delivery partner for Rolls-Royce SMR small modular reactor projects, starting with developments in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic (Amentum press release, 20/01/2026).
Rolls-Royce SMR has been selected as the preferred bidder by Great British Energy – Nuclear to deliver three SMR units in the UK, representing a total capacity of 1.5 GW, and by Czech nuclear operator ČEZ to develop up to 3 GW of new capacity.
- In June 2025, Rolls-Royce SMR was chosen as the UK government’s preferred technology for the country’s first SMR project, with a final investment decision expected in 2029.
- In November 2025, the UK government announced that the Wylfa site on the island of Anglesey in North Wales would host the three Rolls-Royce SMR units. The site, where a Magnox nuclear plant is currently being decommissioned, could potentially accommodate up to eight SMRs (World Nuclear News, 20/01/2026).
- In October 2024, Rolls-Royce SMR was selected by ČEZ to deploy up to 3 GW of electricity capacity in the Czech Republic, and ČEZ subsequently acquired a 20% stake in Rolls-Royce SMR.
The Rolls-Royce SMR is a 470 MWe design based on a small pressurised water reactor and is intended to provide reliable baseload power for at least 60 years (Rolls-Royce SMR press release, 20/01/2026).
