AMEA Power gets approval to connect 2 GW of renewables in Egypt by mid-2025

The Egyptian Council of Ministers has granted approval to the Dubai-based company AMEA Power to connect 2 GW of renewable energy capacity to Egypt's power grid by the summer of 2025. The projects include adding a further 500 MW of solar energy capacity to the 500 MW Abydos solar project, which is currently under construction. Moreover, a combined capacity of 1.5 GW from both solar and wind energy will be connected to the national electricity grid: in addition to 1 GW of solar capacity, AMEA Power is building the 500 MW Amunet wind farm in Ras Ghareb, which is expected to go online in the summer of 2025. The capacity that will be added also includes a battery energy storage system (BESS).

At the end of 2023, wind represented 2.7% of Egypt’s installed capacity with 1.6 GW and 2.8% of its power generation with 6.7 TWh. Solar represented 3% of the country’s installed capacity with 1.8 GW and 1.9% of its power generation with 4.4 TWh. Egypt targets 42% of electricity production from renewables in 2035, with 25% from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower.
