Dubai-based renewable energy developer AMEA Power has announced the commissioning of the 600 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and the 500 kV substation at its 1 GW solar PV + 600 MWh battery storage project located in Benban, Egypt (AMEA Power announcement, 13/07/2026).
“Upon full commissioning, the project will become the largest solar PV and battery energy storage project of its kind in Africa, marking another major milestone in the continent's energy transition,” said the company.
This announcement follows the Egyptian government's recent decision to grant a "golden licence" to two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects developed by AMEA Power-owned entities, with a combined storage capacity of 1.5 GWh. The "golden licence" simplifies the implementation process by consolidating all required approvals, including construction permits and land allocation, into a single authorization (KEI, 08/07/2026).
Although Egypt still relies on natural gas for a substantial portion of its energy supply and electricity generation, the country aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its power mix to 42% by 2030 (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
