AMEA Power commissions a 500 MW solar power plant in Aswan (Egypt)

The Emirati energy company AMEA Power has commissioned a 500 MW solar power plant in Aswan, in southern Egypt. The US$500m Abydos Solar PV power plant was simultaneously inaugurated by the Egyptian government. The solar plant is expected to generate 1.5 TWh/year of renewable electricity, powering approximately 300,000 Egyptian households. It should offset emissions by about 782 ktCO2/year. Construction of the project started in 2023.

In addition, AMEA Power signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) and land agreement for the development of an additional 500 MW wind project in Ras Shukheir, Gulf of Suez, Egypt, for an investment estimated at US$600m.

In July 2024, the Egyptian Council of Ministers had allowed AMEA Power to connect 2 GW of renewable energy capacity to Egypt's power grid by the summer of 2025, including 1 GW of solar capacity and two 500 MW wind projects (Abydos and Amunet). The 500 MW Amunet wind project in Ras Ghareb is currently under construction and expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2025.
