AMEA Power begins construction of a 500 MW wind project in Egypt

The Emirati renewable energy company AMEA Power has installed the first turbine of a 500 MW onshore wind power plant in Egypt, officially starting the construction of the project. The Amunet wind project, located in Ras Ghareb, in Egypt's Red Sea Governorate, will feature a total of 77 turbines of 6.5 MW each, which are being supplied by the Chinese manufacturer Envision Energy.

Once completed, the Amunet wind power plant is expected to be able to produce 2.3 TWh/year of electricity, enough to power about 800,000 Egyptian households and offset about 1 MtCO2/year. For the project, AMEA Power has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).

At the end of 2022, wind represented just above 2% of Egypt’s installed capacity with 1.4 GW and 3.5% of its power generation with 7.4 TWh. Egypt's updated NDC (2023) brings forward to 2030 the country's objective to reach 42% of renewable capacity, initially set for 2035. Indeed, the 2035 Integrated Sustainable Energy strategy (2016) targeted 42% of renewable power generation by 2035, 25% of which from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower.
