The renewable company AM Green has placed a 1.3 GW electrolyser order with John Cockerill Hydrogen for the development of a 1 Mt/year green ammonia project located in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India. The advanced pressurized alkaline electrolysers will produce green hydrogen and convert it into green ammonia, with production expected to commence in the second half of 2026.
This investment includes an initial 640 MW phase, followed by a second 640 MW phase, in line with India’s ambitions under its National Green Hydrogen Mission. AM Green took a final investment decision on the project in August 2024. In addition, as part of this deal, John Cockerill and AM Green are also developing India's largest electrolyser manufacturing plant (2 GW per year) in Kakinada.
India unveiled a green hydrogen and green ammonia plan in 2022, aiming to produce 5 Mt/year in 2030 and for the country to become an export hub for hydrogen. In 2023, India published its National Green Hydrogen Mission, which sets green hydrogen consumption targets for some industries, and establishes a framework to encourage the manufacturing of electrolysers and the production of green hydrogen in the country (SIGHT program).
