Almaraz nuclear power plant in Spain seeks license renewal to 2027-2028

The shareholders of the Almaraz nuclear power plant in Spain - namely Iberdrola, Endesa and Naturgy - have agreed to apply for an operation license renewal before the 31 March 2019 deadline. Almaraz is the oldest nuclear plant in Spain, consisting of the two reactors, rated 1,011 MW and 1,006 MW and commissioned in 1981 and 1983. Their operating licenses will expire in June 2020. Shareholders have agreed to cap the required investment to keep the reactors running until 2027 and 2028, respectively, lifting the risk of an earlier closure.

In February 2019, the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition announced plans to close all the domestic nuclear power plants between 2025 and 2035 as part of the country's objective to generate all its electricity from renewable sources by 2050. Nuclear power accounted for 7% of the domestic installed capacity and 20% of the gross power production in 2018.
