Alinta offers US$190m for the 2GW Liddell coal-fired plant (Australia)

The Australian power company AGL Energy has received a AUD250m (roughly US$190m) bid from the electricity company Alinta Energy, which offers to acquire the 2,000 MW coal-fired Liddell power plant in the Hunter region, in New South Wales (Australia).

The 2,000 MW facility is located near Muswellbrook at Lake Liddell. Located in New South Wales (Australia), it belongs to the biggest Australian coal-fired assets and generates about 8 TWh/year of electricity, enough to meet the power needs of nearly one million homes. It was acquired by AGL from Macquarie Generation (MacGen) for A$1,505m (US$1.4bn) in September 2014.

In December 2017, AGL announced that it would not extend the facility operations beyond its scheduled decommissioning in 2022. Instead, it will replace it with gas peakers, renewables, battery storage and demand response, in line with the New South Wales Generation Plan.
