Alinta Energy starts of construction of a 250 MW/1 GWh BESS in South Australia

Alinta Energy has started construction works on its Reeves Plains Energy Hub in South Australia (Australia) (Alinta Energy, 16/04/2026). Specifically, works have started on the stage 1 of the project, which consists of a 250 MW/1 GWh battery with four hours of storage, capable of supplying the equivalent of about 300,000 households. The facility is scheduled to start operations in 2028, with an operational lifespan of 20-years

In July 2025 Alinta Energy reached an FID for the entirety of the project, which should reach a total capacity of 500 MW/ 2 GWh. The Reeves Plains Energy Hub project will also include a second 250 MW/1 GWh battery, as well as a 300 MW gas-fired power plant. This combination of solutions is designed to provide reliable and stable power to the grid, storing excess energy for periods of high demand.

At the end of 2025, over 30 GW of electricity storage systems were being planned in Australia, of which 3.6 GW are in construction or subject to an FID (Enerdata's Global Energy Research). AEMO said the 18 GW of BESS was applied for grid connection in the NEM, accounting for a third of the 50 GW connection pipeline.
