Alinta Energy has decided to discontinue work on the 900 MW Oven Mountain Pumped Hydro Project (OMPS) in New South Wales, Australia (Alinta Energy project website, 22/10/2026). Citing economic and timing challenges on the project and on a critical transmission line, the project was deemed unviable by the company.
The project was designed with eight hours of storage (7.2 GWh), pumping water more than 600 m uphill between reservoirs and releasing it through turbines to generate electricity. Its output could supply over 600,000 homes, and it was intended to replace coal-fired generation in the state and support more renewables on the grid.
