Algeria’s Solar 1,000 MW project scheme to start producing power by 2024

Algeria’s Solar 1,000 MW scheme is expected to produce its first power at the end of 2023, according to the state-owned company Shaems, which oversees the project. First generation will come at the end of 2023 or beginning of 2024 at the latest from a 30 MW solar PV park that will be built in Beni Ounif (Bechar region) as part of the Solar 1,000 MW project. The power generated by the upcoming solar farms will be sold exclusively to state-owned electricity and natural gas distributor Sonelgaz for a period of 25 years.

The call for tenders for the deployment of the 1 GW PV project have opened in December 2021 and were due to close on 15 June 2022. The deadline was however extended following a request by investors who required more time for conducting financial and technical studies. Through this auction, Algeria will allocate the 1 GW capacity in lots of between 50 MW and 300 MW. 11 sites have already been chosen.

In 2021, solar represented only around 2% of Algeria’s installed capacity with 448 MW. However, the country has an ambitious renewable energy programme, as it aims to auction 4 GW of solar by 2024 and reach 22 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, including 62% from solar PV and 23% from wind.
