Algeria will allocate US$2bn to reduce energy consumption by 10% by 2030

Algeria has announced that it will allocate DZD260bn (US$1.93bn) to implement a 2023-2030 national plan led by the Algerian National Agency for the Promotion and Rationalisation of Energy and aimed at cutting energy consumption by 10% by 2030. The programme will include several activities and projects affecting the housing sector, one of the most energy consuming in the country. In addition, the Algerian Government will launch a pilot project for collective heating and air conditioning in the public sector during the course of 2023.

Energy consumption in Algeria increased by 6% in 2021, after a 5% reduction in 2020. As of 2021, transport made up 33% of the coutry’s final consumption, followed by households and services (31%), industry (19%) and non-energy uses (6%). Gas represented 67% of Algeria’s total primary energy consumption, followed by oil (32%).
