Algeria launches construction of a 1,406 MW CCGT power plant

The Algerian Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies has announced the official launch of construction works for a 1,406 MW combined-cycle gas-fired (CCGT) power plant (Algeria Press Service press release, 27/04/2028).

The gas-fired project, expected to be completed within 48 months, will occupy an area of 40 hectares in El Aouinet, in the Tébessa region, located in the far east of the country near the Tunisian border. With a total capacity of 1,406 MW, it will become the second-largest power plant in Algeria, after the Jijel plant (north-east), which has a capacity of 1.6 GW.

The development of this infrastructure project has been assigned to the Chinese company China National Electric Engineering Co (CNEEC), in partnership with the local company Sonelgaz-Production de l’électricité, a subsidiary of the state-owned energy group Sonelgaz.

The minister also highlighted that additional projects are planned, including the installation of solar panels for households located in remote areas and not connected to the electricity grid.

Algeria relies heavily on gas for electricity generation, accounting for 99% of its power mix, while solar represented less than 1% in 2024 (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
