Algeria funds 40 MW power plant in Chad amid expanding regional energy push

The Algerian Prime Minister and his Chadian counterpart have laid the foundation stone of a 40 MW gas-fired power plant project using two gas turbines in N’Djamena (Chad) (Algerian Press Service, 08/06/2026). Named the “Algerian–Chadian Solidarity Power Plant”, the project will be fully financed by Algeria. Its implementation has been assigned to the subsidiary of the Algerian gas and electricity distribution company, “Sonelgaz International”.

Chad is almost entirely reliant on oil for its power generation. In 2025, oil represented 99% of national electricity production (Enerdata Global Energy Research).

Algeria has recently been expanding its energy cooperation projects with neighbouring countries:

  • At the beginning of June, the Algerian Prime Minister also inaugurated a similar 40 MW power plant in Niger, which was likewise built by Sonelgaz International.
  • In May 2026, Algeria and Mozambique announced strengthened bilateral cooperation, including a project to build a 1 GW power plant in Mozambique, as the country seeks to reduce its reliance on hydropower, which is affected by variable output due to drought conditions (KEI, 22/05/2026).
  • At the end of May 2026, talks were held between Algeria and Tunisia regarding a planned 1.4 GW combined-cycle power plant in Tunisia, a country highly dependent on Algeria for its energy supply (KEI, 27/05/2026).
