Algeria creates a new Commission for renewable and energy efficiency

Algeria has recently created the Commission for renewable energy and energy efficiency. The Commission, which has legal personality and financial autonomy, reporting to the Prime Minister, will be responsible for developing a national policy in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency, and evaluating its implementation.

Until now, the Agency for the Promotion and the Rationalisation of the Use of Energy (APRUE), created in 1985 under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy, oversaw energy efficiency. The agency was tasked with the preparation of the national energy efficiency program (PNME), implemented with the support of the National Energy Efficiency Fund (FNME).

The National Energy Efficiency Programme 2016-2030 (PNEE) adopted in 2015 aims to retrofit 100,000 dwellings per year and strengthen the efficiency requirements of end-use equipment, with a global energy-saving objective of 30 Mtoe in 2030 in the building sector.
