Algeria commissions two solar PV plants totalling 400 MW

The Algerian Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies has announced that two solar power plants with a total capacity of 400 MW have recently been commissioned, a 200 MW production plant in Tendla, in the El Meghaier province, and the 200 MW solar plant in El Ghrous, in the Biskra province (Algeria Press press release, 12/04/2026).

The Minister explained that the projects are part of the implementation of the first phase of the 3.2 GW project under the national program to produce 15 GW by 2035. As for the overall progress of the 3.2 GW solar PV energy project, the completion rate of the 22 planned plants has reached 40%, according to the explanations provided during a national meeting of energy and renewable energy sector leaders. Overall, more than 1.4 GW are scheduled for progressive commissioning during 2026.

The country’s power generation was mainly from gas (99%) in 2024, with solar contributing almost 1% (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
