Algeria commissions its largest solar PV plant at 300 MW

The Algerian Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies has inaugurated the Foulia solar PV plant, described as the largest of its kind in the country, with an installed capacity of 300 MW (Algeria Press Service, 26/10/2026).

Spanning 600 hectares, the facility was built by Chinese company CSCEC. It is the third PV plant to become operational in 2026, following the commissioning in April 2026 of the Tendla plant in El-Meghaier Province and the El-Ghrous plant in Biskra Province, each with a capacity of 200 MW (KEI, 15/04/2026).

These developments are part of Algeria’s national programme to reach 15 GW of solar PV capacity by 2035. An initial phase comprising 22 projects with a combined capacity of 3.2 GW is currently under development across the country. The government aims to bring 1.4 GW of new capacity online by the end of 2026. In addition, the Minister of Energy recently announced that 17 projects totalling 2.4 GW are scheduled to enter service in 2027.

As of today, Algeria’s electricity mix remains almost entirely dependent on natural gas, which accounts for 99% of generation according to our data, while solar power still represents a marginal share. The country’s solar development strategy is intended to gradually reduce the use of natural gas for electricity generation.
