Algeria has officially launched construction work on its section of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) (Algeria Press Service statement, 04/06/2026).
- The TSGP, a 4,128-km pipeline, is designed to transport up to 30 bcm/year of natural gas from Nigeria, through Niger, to Algeria’s Mediterranean coast, for export to Europe.
- The project is being jointly developed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), the Nigerien Oil Products Company (SONIDEP), and the Algerian state-owned company SONATRACH.
- It is structured as a trilateral partnership, in which SONATRACH and NNPC together hold 90%, while Niger holds the remaining 10% stake through SONIDEP.
According to a press release from SONATRACH, “From the strategic gas hub in Hassi R’Mel (Algeria), the TSGP will be connected to the national gas transportation network as well as to the exporting infrastructures currently in operation in Algeria, ensuring its optimal integration into regional and international natural gas transportation systems”.
While both Algeria and Nigeria already have significant gas infrastructure that can be integrated into the project, Algeria’s President previously confirmed that Niger’s section of the pipeline will be financed and constructed by state-owned SONATRACH (Zawya, 04/06/2026).
The announcement was made during the fifth ministerial meeting of the Steering Committee for the TSGP project, held in Algiers, and attended by energy ministers from Algeria, Nigeria, and Niger, among others. An MoU for the TSGP was initially signed in 2022 by Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria.
