The Algerian Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies has met with a delegation from the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector (Algeria Press Service, 24/05/2026).
According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Energy, Algeria has committed to continuing its electricity deliveries to Tunisia, despite the significant constraints linked to peak summer demand on its own grid during the summer 2026 period.
During these discussions, topics included Tunisia’s electricity supply, as well as a project to build a 1.4 GW combined-cycle power plant in Tunisia.
The talks also addressed the trilateral electricity interconnection project between Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. On this occasion, the minister emphasized the need to accelerate its implementation, given its importance for strengthening regional energy integration and supporting the energy security of the countries in the region.
These announcements come just a few days after Algeria met with government officials from Mozambique to discuss the development of a 1 GW power plant in Mozambique (KEI, 22/05/2026).
Tunisia was a net exporter of electricity until 2021, when it became a net importer. In 2024, electricity imports rose by 23% to reach 3.1 TWh, mainly coming from Algeria, while exports remained low at 0.2 TWh (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
