The governments of Algeria and Mozambique have held discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector (Algerian Ministry of Energy press release, 20/05/2026). During the meeting, the Algerian energy minister highlighted a proposed joint cooperation project between the two countries, including the development of a 1 GW power plant intended for Mozambique.
Mozambique continues to rely heavily on hydropower, with output varying depending on rainfall conditions. In 2024, hydropower made up 83% of the country’s energy mix, followed by natural gas with 16%, according to our data.
However, the country is actively seeking to diversify its energy supply. As of 2025, it had approximately 2.5 GW of gas-fired capacity under construction and around 20 GW of renewable and thermal projects under development, including a significant share of solar projects totaling 13 GW (Enerdata Power Plant Tracker).
