Alcazar Energy Partners (AEP) has started the construction of a 400 MW wind project in North Macedonia. The Stip wind project is located in the municipalities of Karbinci, Radovis, and Stip, 75 km southeast of the capital city of Skopje. The project consists of the installation of 55 turbines, covering an area of 326 ha, where they are expected to generate enough energy to power more than 100,000 homes and avoid the emission of up to 690 ktCO2/year. The project is being financed by loans provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
In December 2023, North Macedonia launched a just energy transition investment platform, backed by the EIB and EBRD, in which the country aims to mobilise up to €3bn in investments to accelerate its energy transition by phasing out lignite-fired power generation by 2027, developing 1.7 GW of renewables by 2030, and investing in grids and storage.
