Alba (Bahrain) signs contract for a new 681 MW CCGT plant

Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) has signed a full turnkey contract with Mitsubishi Power and China's SEPCO III consortium for a new 681 MW CCGT unit to expand its 1.8 GW Power Station 5, which already hosts three gas turbines, steam turbines and heat recovery steam generators. Under the terms of the contract, the Mitsubishi Power-SEPCO III consortium will be responsible to design, engineer, procure, construct and commission the new power block, which be able of using up to 30% hydrogen fuel by volume, to reach 100% hydrogen fuel in the future with minimal existing infrastructure modification. The fourth power unit will increase Power Station 5's capacity to more than 2.4 GW. Commercial operations are scheduled to start in 2024.

The aluminium producer owns and operates 5 gas-fired power plants with a total capacity of 4 GW. Bahrain has 8.8 GW of installed capacity, with gas accounting for almost 100% of the total.
