AGL selects site for first LNG import terminal project in Australia

The Australian energy company AGL Energy has selected Crib Point (Western Port) in Victoria as the preferred site for a proposed LNG import terminal in south-eastern Australia.

The project, aimed at avoiding a looming gas shortage in New South Wales and Victoria (moratoriums on the development of coal seam gas resources implemented), was announced in late 2016. AGL will dedicate A$17m (US$13m) to a feasibility study on the potential regasification terminal, with the aim of reaching a final investment decision in 2018 or 2019. The construction could start in 2019, in order to have the LNG terminal commissioned as early as 2020-2021.

Australia currently has seven operational liquefaction plants, with a combined LNG production capacity of nearly 55 Mt/year. Including the 4 projects under construction (31.8 Mt/year) and the projects under development (11 Mt/year), Australia will take over Qatar (77 Mt/year) as the largest LNG producer worldwide.
