AGL Energy submits 125 MW/500 MWh Abermain BESS for approval (Australia)

AGL Energy has submitted its 125 MW/500 MWh Abermain BESS project for federal approval from the Australian government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act (Australian government press release, 15/10/2026).

The project is being developed by Abermain BESS OpCo, a wholly owned subsidiary of AGL Energy, and it consists of an enclosed lithium-ion battery system with power conversion systems, transformers, inverters and switchgear near Brisbane, Australia. Construction is expected to last for up to 18 months, while the operating life cycle should last for up to 30 years. The project would connect to the National Electricity Market (NEM) through Powerlink’s Abermain Substation. Powerlink is separately developing the Abermain Battery Connection Project, which it would build, own and operate.

AGL acquired Abermain from Firm Power in 2024, adding a 5.8 GW BESS pipeline, of which 2.7 GW is in Queensland.
