AFRY, a Swedish engineering, design and advisory company, has secured a key technical advisory role for an LNG-to-power project in Vietnam. The project comprises an integrated floating LNG (FLNG) terminal and a 1.5 GW gas-fired power plant (AFRY press release, 31/08/2026). The company’s scope covers technical advisory services for the offshore LNG receiving infrastructure and a combined cycle power plant (CCPP), including subsea gas pipeline systems, a submerged yoke mooring, marine facilities, and offshore surveys.
Construction of the Thai Binh LNG-to-Power project began in October 2025, with operations expected to commence in late 2029. The project, developed by Thái Bình LNG Power, a consortium comprising Tokyo Gas (40%), Kyuden (30%), and TTVN Group (30%), is forecast to generate 6–10 TWh/year of electricity.
As Vietnam’s electricity demand continues to increase, the company highlights that the assignment will contribute to the development of LNG infrastructure and reinforce the country’s power generation capacity.
Vietnam aims to shift away from coal for power generation and started imported LNG. Vietnam received its first LNG shipment at the Thi Vai terminal in 2023, with plans to increase LNG's share in power generation (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
