AfDB lends US$500m for power transmission and distribution in Angola

Angola has secured a US$500m loan from the African Development Bank to finance the Phase 1 of the Energy Sector Efficiency and Expansion Program (ESEEP I). The program seeks to bolster the operating capacity of the Angolan power distribution utility ENDE and strengthen the country’s electricity transmission and distribution system. It includes construction of a 400 kV Central-South transmission line (343 km), as the Northern part of the country (Cuanza Norte, Malanje and Zaire) has more than 1 GW excess power, and the installation of more than 1.2 million prepaid meters, with the objective to improve ENDE’s revenue collection.

As part of its "Angola 2025" long-term plan, the country aims to increase its electrification rate to 60% in 2025 (42% in 2017), to raise the generation capacity to 9.9 GW (5.3 GW in 2018), to rehabilitate and extend transmission and distribution grids, and to reduce tariff subsidisation.
