AfDB grants US$303m for a 225 kV Mauritania-Mali power interconnector

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has granted a US$303m loan to Mauritania and Mali to support the construction of a 1,500 km power interconnector between the two countries (US$270m for Mauritania and US$33m for Mali). The 600 MW Mauritania-Mali 225 kV electricity interconnection project, estimated at a total investment of US$888m, is expected to be able to connect 100,000 households to the grid in the two countries.

The power line, part of the AfDB’s Desert-to-Power Initiative, will be built in three lots (one in Mali and two in Mauritania), and will make it possible to install an additional 2,000 km of medium and low voltage electricity distribution networks along its original route. In addition, the project comprises the development of two solar power plants of 50 MW each, which will be built in Kiffa and Néma (Mauritania). The electricity produced will be transported through the new high-voltage line.
