The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a US$54m loan for the development of a 120 MW onshore wind project in Mozambique, which will be the country’s first utility-scale wind project. Mozambique’s national power utility, EDM, will be the sole off-taker from the wind park, located about 50 km west of Maputo (southern Mozambique), under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
The Namaacha project, which will require an investment of US$224.5m, is expected to generate 332 GWh/year and offset emissions by nearly 72 ktCO2/year once completed. In July 2024, the US International Development Finance Corp (DFC) had approved a loan of up to US$99m for the development of the project. It is developed by a joint venture of Globeleq Africa and Source Energia.
At the end of 2023, Mozambique had a total installed capacity of 2.9 GW, of which 75% is hydropower (mainly at the 2.08 GW Cahora Bassa hydropower plant) and 15% gas-fired.
