The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has obtained a €210m financing from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to fund the Nigerian Transmission Expansion Project (NTEP-1). The project, which is part of the US$1.6bn Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme (TREP), aims at rehabilitating and expanding the transmission grid in the North West, South, and South East Nigeria. The project also ambitions to reduce the use of small-scale diesel generators and therefore contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions by saving approximately 11.5 MtCO2/year.
In the North West, the NTEP-1 includes the construction of a new 205 km 330 kV transmission lines linking Mando (Kaduna) to Rimin Zakara (Kano), as well as the construction of substations. In the South and South East, it encompasses the reconstruction of the 107 km 330 kV Delta-Benin transmission line and 138 km 30 kV Onitsha-Ihiala-Alaoji transmission line.
A second phase of the project (NTEP-2) is already at the financing stage. It targets transmission grid expansion and rehabilitation in North East and Central Nigeria.
