The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a financing package of up to USD110m for the 300 MW Aysha Wind Project in Ethiopia’s Somali Region, which will be the first wind-based Independent Power Producer (IPP) in the country (AfDB press release, 16/07/2026).
The USD508m project is developed by AMEA Power, with Ethiopian Electric Power as the sole off taker under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA). It includes a 300 MW wind plant, a 5 km transmission line and upgrades to the Aysha II substation. Once operational, it is expected to generate around 1.2 TWh/year, helping diversify the country’s electricity mix, which currently relies on hydropower for around 96% of generation. The project is also expected to avoid approximately 1.39 MtCO₂ over the 25-year contract period.
The approval builds on progress made with the Aysha II wind project, that started operations with an initial capacity of 120 MW in January 2026. The project is fully aligned with Ethiopia’s National Electrification Program aimed at achieving universal electricity access by 2030, as well as its long-term net-zero ambitions.
