AES sells its 764 MW Guacolda coal-fired plant in Chile

AES Andes, an affiliate of AES Corporation, has completed the sale of its majority stake (50% plus one share stake) in the 764 MW Guacolda coal-fired power plant in Chile to Capital Advisors, through El Águila Energy II. The company will use the net proceeds of the US$34m sale to finance renewable growth.

With the sale of Guacolda, AES now operates 7 coal-fired power plants in Chile: Angamos (502 MW), Campiche (249 MW), Cochrane (490 MW), Laguna Verde (45 MW), Norgener (262 MW), Nueva Ventanas (249 MW) and Ventanas (443 MW). Earlier in July 2021, AES Corporation signed an agreement with the Chilean government to shut down 1,097 MW of coal generation by 2025, subject to the requirements of the power grid. The company plans to close 4 units, which entered commercial operations between 2009 and 2013, namely Angamos-1, Angamos-2, Campiche and Nuevos Ventanas.
