AES seeks approval to retire unit at Ventanas coal-fired plant (Chile)

Energy company AES Andes has requested from the Chilean National Energy Commission (CNE) permission to discontinue operations of Unit 2 (208 MW) of the Ventanas coal-fired plant, located in the Valparaíso region (Chile), as of 31 December 2023. In July 2022, AES had announced the cease of operations of Ventanas power plant Unit 1 (120 MW), and with the withdrawal of the  second unit, the company expects to eliminate 2.5 MtCO2 emissions, further advancing with its Greentegra transformational strategy to phase out coal by 2025. The Ventanas plant comprises two other coal-fired units, units 3 & 4, each with a capacity of 272 MW. They are due to close in 2025.

In Chile, AES Andes owns a portfolio of 3,864 MW, made up of 2,129 MW from thermal power, 771 MW from hydroelectric, 348 MW from wind, 429 MW from solar PV, and 13 MW from biomass sources, in addition to 174 MW of energy storage batteries, seawater desalination plants, and transmission lines.
